Pigeon Power Infographic

Pigeons are typically considered mundane not-very-bright pests. Some even refer to them as “rats of the sky”! I wanted to challenge that perception through creating an infographic to encourage people to give pigeons the respect they deserve. Pigeons are one of the most complex and well-studied organisms on Earth and are capable of high-level cognition. They possess multiple sensory superpowers that have enabled them to adapt to human environments. It’s about time pigeons get some respect!

Process

Research is always the first step when starting a new project. I read many scientific articles concerning pigeon research in order to determine which elements I wanted to include in my poster. I then chose to center my poster around two key ideas: navigation and cognition.

Sketches & Comprehensive Layout

When sketching I prefer to focus more on layout than details, ensuring that the movement of the piece enhances the information order and flow. I block out where text will be to examine if its placement will guide the reader’s eye to the appropriate area. 

The comprehensive layout sketch was completed in Adobe Illustrator. This step allows me to play with color in addition to composition. In the final piece I decided to go with a stronger purple tone to add contrast and visual impact while also drawing attention towards the pigeons.
